Update: Comstock, MI, Asst. Chief Discusses Jumping to Avoid Being Hit on Icy Highway

Dec. 16, 2024
The crash occurred on a stretch of highway named after Comstock Fire Chief Ed Switalski who was hit and killed in 2017.

When a box truck skidded on an icy road and crashed into a fire engine last week, Comstock firefighters ran for their lives.

Comstock Township Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Thompson knows just how lucky the firefighters were to have escape unscathed.

The incident happened on a part of I-94 named for their Fire Chief Ed Switalski, who was struck and killed in 2017, Thomposon told WZZM.

"Right near the site is where the sign is. That part of I 94 is named after fire chief, Ed Switalski, who lost his life just a mile and a half down the road on the highway. It absolutely could have been almost the same scenario. Yeah, so we're very fortunate that it wasn't," he said.

Three apparatus were damaged in the incident as well as a police cruiser.

Watching the video of the crash, he encouraged drivers to use caution and slow down.

"Try to drive for the weather. You don't have to go 70 miles per hour on the highway. Leave early, so you can take your time and not be in a hurry...If you see a police officer, a fire engine, tow truck, anything on the side of the road, just try to give them room as much as you can."
